The fly fishing in the United States is some of the best in the world. A look at the best trout streams in the country goes as follows:
The Animas River - near Durango Colorado is thought by many to be the best place for trout fishing in the U.S, and is as it is productive. Tagged a “Gold Medal" river, which the state of Colorado awards only the very best fishing spots.
The Kvichak River in Alaska - while not in the continental U.S. is famous for its Rainbow Trout. These Rainbows can grow to thirty inches in length and weigh 20 lbs. Fly fishing for these rainbows can be a real adventure. The river flows into Lake IIiamna where the fishing is also pretty good. Seeing these acrobatic jumping up to six feet out of the water is amazing.
The Flathead River - in Montana offers fantastic fly fishing. Much of it is accessed by horseback, hiking, or mules. The River is the southern boundary of Glacier National Park. Trout populations are self sustaining now and stocking ended in the early 1960’s. Catch and release have helped the cutthroat, brook, and bull trout thrive and are now considered wild trout.
The Boise River – South Fork in Idaho is a Blue Ribbon fishery. Wild Rainbow trout are the main attraction, up to 25" in length.
Hundreds of other trout streams and rivers qualify for a list like this. The is never enough space to list them all, and not enough time to fish them all, but this is a great start.
